Color plays a significant role in the decoration of an apartment, in solving the artistic appearance of each item, in combining various items of furniture into one harmonious whole. Color combinations have a great emotional expressiveness and have a certain psychophysiological effect on a person.
Different colors and color combinations are perceived differently by a person, cause a variety of associations, feelings: they can create a cheerful mood or irritate, increase or decrease performance. Color can also affect our sense of space and our visual perception of it.
The same room may appear larger or smaller, higher or lower, longer or shorter, lighter or darker, depending on the color.
Skillfully using the properties of color, choosing the right color scheme, you can make your home really beautiful. But how to choose from the abundance of colors and colors that will help you create artistically integral and harmonious combinations in the color of walls, furniture, drapery and upholstery fabrics, carpets?
There can be a lot of color combinations, but they can not always be beautiful and pleasing to the eye. The most common ones are: a one-color combination, a simple combination of additional colors, a complex combination of additional colors, and finally a combination of three colors.
In a single-color combination, darker and lighter shades of the same color, such as green, are combined. But it is almost impossible to pick up furniture, drapery fabrics, carpet of the same color, and the room in this case will look boring.
In a simple combination of additional colors, two additional colors are combined, for example, red with green, blue with orange, and purple with yellow. This is a very common combination: it is often used in patterned fabrics, carpet colors, and so on. If necessary, the contrast is softened by adding a third, neutral color to the combination, such as gray.
In a complex combination of additional colors, one of them is taken in two or more shades, for example, blue is not combined with pure orange, but with orange-red and orange-yellow, or, conversely, orange is combined with blue-green and blue-purple.
The combination of three different colors is very interesting. However, all three colors can not be taken in equal quantities, one of them must prevail (walls or furniture upholstery), and the other two-to be like a Supplement (carpet, curtains, sofa upholstery).
Each color with a range of all its shades has its own character, creates a certain impression.
Red is a warm, cheerful color. The red color has a wide variety of shades: from pale pink to maroon. Light shades of pink are in harmony with many light tones, such as pale green, greenish-blue, pale yellow, and dark red of the same hue.
Orange is also a warm color. It has many beautiful shades: from pale to warm brown, beige, peach and coral.
Yellow with all its shades – from cream to brown-is the best of all warm colors for decorating rooms. Light yellow is especially acceptable for painting walls in poorly lit rooms where there is little sun, or in areas where the weather is often cloudy, as light yellow tones give the impression of sunlight even on a cloudy day. It is best to take light shades of yellow for the walls: cream, lemon yellow, pale gold. The yellow walls are suitable for upholstery and curtains in red, green, blue and brown colors.
Blue and blue are cold colors. They seem to remove objects from us, creating the impression of space and tranquility. Their shades are successfully combined with a variety of colors. It is better to paint Sunny rooms in a pale blue color.
The green color is characterized by a large variety of shades of calm tones that go well with almost all colors and are a good background for other colors. The room, whose walls are painted in a pale green color, seems more spacious. Greenish-gray shades are also suitable for Wallpaper. Especially good green color in combination with wood of natural color. Yellowish-green shades are worse combined with other colors and use them carefully.
Purple looks cold in bluish shades and warm in reddish ones. Dark purple tones look lush, rich, but gloomy; but light colors-lilac, lilac-pink create a calm atmosphere. Purple color of a bluish hue goes well with green, gray or cream. By itself, purple, especially dark, is not suitable for painting walls and upholstery., although it is good as an addition in a variety of combinations when decorating the interior.
Choosing different combinations of colors, do not forget about neutral colors and above all about white. It can be successfully used for painting walls. On the white walls, the wooden furniture stands out very nicely – polished and dark oak. White color goes well with any color, serves as a beautiful background.
Black color should be used in limited quantities and only to set off bright colors. In order to soften the contrast, black can be replaced with dark gray or dark brown.
Gray color can be very different. Darker shades look gloomy, but light gray ones are quite suitable for painting walls, as they are a beautiful background on which bright curtains, furniture upholstery, prints, and paintings win. Gray color is good in combination with light green, blue, crimson and bright red.
The color beige is also a great background. It can be combined with brown, dark red, green. When Wallpaper or upholstery is beige, you will need bright spots in the form of a pillow, rug, ceramic vase, and flowers.
It should be remembered that warm colors – red, orange, yellow – stand out strongly, as if bringing objects closer, and cold-blue, blue-on the contrary, distance objects and, moreover, strongly absorb light. Green and purple tones occupy an intermediate position: some are warm, others are cold. Bright shades of the main colors are very sharp and you should use them carefully, softening them by adding other colors in the combinations that we recommended at the beginning of this section.
You can start choosing the color scheme of the furniture with any item you have, for example, with a sofa and chairs upholstered in a good fabric that you are not going to change, with a carpet or curtains. In any combination of colors, one color must prevail, that is, this color will occupy the largest surface. The predominant color of the room often gives the color of the walls. The colors of furniture upholstery, curtains and curtains, and carpet will be complementary in combination; finally, the third color will play an auxiliary role, linking the two main colors. Auxiliary, color-binding items can be in the room sofa cushions, vases.
It is good to add bright, decorating and enlivening spots of a harmonious color to a monotonous combination of colors, which can take up very little space. Such spots can serve as chair upholstery, tablecloth, napkins.
First of all, remember that all colors look different in daylight than in artificial light; therefore, when buying Wallpaper, upholstery, do not forget to look at how they look in electric light. Check not only each color, but also its combination with other colors in daylight and artificial light.
If you need to enter a bright tone into the color combination, it is better to repeat it 2-3 times in the form of several small items: pillows, vases for flowers, – use as small spots in the pattern of the carpet, fabrics.
It is not recommended to take only warm or cold tones; even with a large variety of them, it is necessary to shade the predominant color with other, sharply different ones: cold with warm and Vice versa.
The same color has many shades-from the lightest to the darkest. But both light and dark shades of the same color can not be used exactly the same for all parts of the room and any piece of furniture. The shade that is suitable for painting the walls will be
too light for the carpet; a bright, light tone, beautiful for upholstery or curtains, will look bad on the walls.
Each of us has a favorite color. But this is not always the case when choosing a color or for a combination of colors: for example, no matter how much you like purple or blue, you will not paint the walls of a room with it if it faces North.
